What is the Learning Assistance and Mentoring Program? The Comprehensive Learning Assistance, Mentoring and Progression Program (LAMP) at Bethune-Cookman College (BCC) is a multifaceted program designed to support and enhance entering freshman. This program has several components: Summer Bridge Program, Mentoring, Supplemental Instruction, and Progression. It is a retention program to provide varied services needed to enhance and foster academic success. This program is designed for high school graduates who do not meet the College's admission requirements. Students who present a profile of potential for achievement at Bethune-Cookman College may be eligible for the Learning Assistance and Mentoring Progression Program (LAMP) through the School of General Studies. LAMP increases a student's potential for admission to and success in the College. If you are selected, LAMP will furnish a five-week summer bridge program designed to further full acceptance and matriculation at BCC. Placement testing, instruction, and a support system will be provided to promote progress and full matriculation at Bethune-Cookman College. Since enrollment in LAMP is limited, students are encouraged to officially enroll by quickly returning the contract once notified of eligibility.
What is the process for gaining full admission to Bethune-Cookman College?
The first step in the process is to enroll in LAMP's summer bridge session. The five-week residential, program is designed to assist the participant's transition from high school to college. The program provides placement testing, instruction in reading, English, mathematics, study skills, health and physical fitness, as well as personal and social adjustment seminars. Upon successful completion of LAMP's summer session, participants will be fully admitted to the College and advised to select appropriate courses to fulfill Bethune-Cookman College's requirements through the School of General Studies.
Instructional Component
The coursework is designed to help students learn those personal, social, and academic skills essential for academic success, including the knowledge and skills that lead to individual learning and help prepare students for a college education.
Mentoring
Bi-Weekly seminars held on Monday nights focus on study habits and skills, time management, social and adjustment skills, as well as personal and group counseling.
Computer Laboratories
LAMP students have access to the Tri-Learning Center (math), the Reading Lab, and the Writing Center through the School of General Studies. Programs on careers, goal setting, math, reading, writing, computer skills, and physical wellness activities are made available.
Learning Assistance Program
Individual and group tutorials and study groups are available to students without charge. Students who are experiencing difficulty or wish to improve their performance in any academic course are encouraged to seek assistance. Supplemental instruction is designed to help students refine necessary cognitive and applied study skills to earn better grades in high-risk courses. The goal is to help students learn how to learn course content, earn higher grades and become independent learners.
Academic Advisement and Counseling
Advisement staff helps students select courses and develop a one-year educational program. Counselors are available if students need to confidentially discuss aspects of their academic or personal experiences at Bethune-Cookman College. LAMP is funded in part through a State of Florida grant and additional funding is necessary.
