Student Support Services

The Student Support Services Program at Bethune-Cookman College is designed to provide academic, personal, and related support to eligible participants.  Specifically, the program seeks to increase the retention and eventual graduation rate of participating students.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIRMENTS

The Student Support Services Program is Funded through the United States Department Of Education.  Students who meet the criteria are invited to apply for acceptance.  Each student will be interviewed by the Director or Counselor and given an individual needs assessments.  Information from assessment will be used to determine appropriate services for each student.

MAJOR GOALS
  • To provide a climate conducive for learning
  • To provide opportunities for academic and personal enhancement
  • To increase the retention and graduation rate of the Student Support Services Participants
  • To provide assistance in career planning.

SERVICES

The Student Support Services Program focuses on six areas of services:  Math and English classes, tutoring, academic advising, counseling, career planning and placement, cultural and social enrichment.

ENGLSH / MATH DEVELOPMENT

The Student Support Services Program employs an English and Math instructor to teach classes.  Participants are required to enroll in these classes if placement scores so indicate.

TUTORING

The Student Support Services Program provides peer tutoring to all participants who desire help.  Tutoring is offered depending on time, need and space.  Tutoring is usually scheduled in the evening during the week.  Students requesting tutors will be assigned through the Counselor.

ACADEMIC ADVISOR

Faculty advisors provide assistance in selection of appropriate courses, major and interpretation of college policies.  Students are expected to meet with their advisors at least once a month, or more frequently if needed, to discuss progress of social, personal, financial or career concerns that may arise.

COUNSELING

The Student Support Services Program provides counseling for participants with various concerns.  The students will have assistance in seeking employment and summer internships.  Social, personal, financial or career issues are discussed and individual and group activities are designed to build self-esteem and to minimize the obstacles that often impede success.

CAREER PLANNING AND PLACEMENT

The Career Planning and Placement Center assists Student Support Services Participants in determining career aptitudes.  Career options and early opportunities for entrance into career related fields are explored.  Assistance is offered to those seeking entrance into Graduate/Professional School.

CULTURAL AND SOCIAL ENRICHMENT

Student Support Services participants will have opportunities to attend and participate in cultural and social affairs that will allow them to develop a sense of belonging to the greater social milieu.
