Financial Assistance
Students are encouraged to seek out scholarship and other financial assistance to underwrite their educational expenses. Below are the names and information about a few university and outside sources of funding.
The Bethune-Cookman University Office of Financial Aid provides a comprehensive list of scholarships available to all BCU students. A number of these scholarships are earmarked for mass communications students. See the list for information about requirements. Applications are due in the Office of Financial Aid by May 1, 2007 for the 2007-08 academic year.
There are a number of organizations outside Bethune-Cookman University that provide scholarship funding to students interested in careers in journalism and mass communications. Visit the following sites for more information about these scholarships.

NABJ/CNN Scholarship
Number of Awards Available: Four (4) four-year scholarships
Amount of the Award: $25,000 ($6,725 per year for four years)
Eligibility Criteria
Rigorous competition for the scholarship is open to high school seniors who are currently attending an accredited high-school. Students must be accepted at an accredited college college/university pursuing a career in broadcast journalism.
· Be a high school senior, enrolled at an accredited academic high school.
· Accepted to an accredited four-year university, with a major in broadcast journalism.
· Minimum 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
· 2 Letters of recommendation
· Proven community involvement
· 1000 word essay
Additional Criteria
· To be considered and to receive a scholarship, applicants must be a member of NABJ
· Previous NABJ scholarship winners are not eligible
· The grant is awarded directly to the recipient’s college or university
· The recipient will participate in the NABJ Mentor Program
Scholarships will be awarded upon proof of enrollment. The winner will be formally recognized on the NABJ Web site, at the NABJ Convention and in the convention program book.
Newhouse Foundation Scholarship

Amount of the Award:$5,000
Eligibility Criteria
Competition for the scholarship is open to any African American high school senior who will be a freshman in the fall and will attend an accredited four-year institution. The student is eligible for renewal for three years providing the student:
Majors in print journalism
Maintains a minimum grade point average of 3.0
Works with the campus newspaper
Grants will be awarded upon proof of enrollment in school. All scholarship winners must be members of NABJ before the grants are awarded.
