INTERLIBRARY LOAN SERVICE
WHAT IS INTERLIBRARY LOAN? An
interlibrary loan is a transaction through which library
materials are made available by one library to another for
the use of an individual for research or serious study.
WHO MAY USE IT? Faculty,
undergraduates and staff may request needed material through
Interlibrary Loan.
WHAT MAY BE BORROWED? Listed
below are materials that often are not available
through Interlibrary Loan:
-
Periodicals. Photocopy may be
requested in lieu of loan.
-
Dissertations and Theses.
Some libraries lend doctoral dissertations; many do not.
Most dissertations are available for purchase from
University
Microfilms International. Masters' theses tend
to be more often available through Interlibrary Loan than
are doctoral dissertations.
-
Special Collections.
-
Reference Books.
-
Rare Books and Manuscripts.
-
Newspapers in the Original. Microfilm
is generally available for loan.
-
Duplicates of Books Which Are in the
Carl Swisher Library Collection unless the need is
urgent and the material can be found in another Central
Florida Library.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE? One to
two weeks, on the average, when the needed material can be
found in the Central Florida area. Two to four weeks,
on the average, when the material must be obtained from
outside the area.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Photocopy acquired through Interlibrary Loan will be cost
free to faculty, undergraduates and staff. There is no
charge to the Interlibrary Loan patron for the borrowing of
library materials. A processing fee of 25 cents per
exposure will be assessed for materials not picked up.
PROCEDURE FOR REQUESTING AND RECEIVING
MATERIAL
-
A separate
request form in
some cases must be filled out for each item desired.
-
Request
forms must be filled out completely, with full
bibliographic information for the item requested. If
the borrower does not give a complete citation, the
processing of the transaction may be delayed.
-
If the borrower has a firm deadline (i.e.,
a date beyond which the requested material is not needed),
that should be noted at the proper place on the
request form.
-
When the requested material arrives,
borrowers will be notified by phone, if possible.
They should come by the Reference Department to pick up
the material as soon as possible. It is the
responsibility of the borrower to check on the status of
the requested material.
MORE INFORMATION FOR THE BORROWER
-
The length of the loan period is set by
the lending library. It is usually two or three
weeks, but varies with the lending library.
Restrictions, such as "library use only" and "no
photocopying" are set also by the lending library.
These restrictions must be strictly observed.
Failure to comply with such limits and restrictions will
result in a loss of Interlibrary Loan privileges.
-
Renewals should be requested only in
exceptional cases. When a renewal is necessary, the
borrower must get in touch with the Carl Swisher Reference
Department three or four days before the material is due.
Material on loan is subject to recall by the lending
library at any time.
-
The borrower is responsible for the
material borrowed and, in the event of loss or damage, is
obligated to meet the cost of repair or replacement.
-
Materials borrowed through Interlibrary
Loan must be returned directly to the Reference
Department. The Reference Department Office is open
from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. When
the office is closed, materials may be returned to the
librarian on duty.
