“The retreat’’ was constructed in 1915 and purchased for Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune through the generosity of long-time friends and benefactors Thomas H. White and James M. Gamble of Proctor and Gamble fame. Both the gravesite and the home are National Historic Landmark as well as a United Methodists Historic Site.
