Do you have what it
takes to become a secondary school teacher? Expert teachers have a rich store of well-organized
knowledge about many specific situations of teaching. Teaching is an art
and a science. As an art, teachers demonstrate creativity, and talent with
the judgment of an artist. As a science, teaching requires understanding
research findings on learning and instruction, ability to use a variety of
teaching strategies, familiarity with subject-specific ways of teaching,
and knowing how to provide appropriate settings for learning.
Learning to teach is a
gradual process.
Good teachers are those who are good learners. At Bethune-Cookman
University
we follow the Florida Department of Education Sunshine State Standards and
encourage students to utilize technology such as Live Text for portfolio
building and assessment. Advanced computer literacy helps us to identify
potential classroom materials; share successful practices in integrating
technology, and maintains our desired status as lifelong learning. Social
Science Education Majors visit and work in secondary level classrooms to
get an idea of what to expect in a teaching career.
Maintain close contact with your advisor.
Frequent consultation
will help you make decisions about what courses to take, how
to prepare for the CLAST, General Knowledge, Subject Area, and the Florida
Teacher Certification Examination, scholarship opportunities and job
placement. Consult your advisor prior to registration every semester and
maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA as you prepare for Student Teaching experiences
your senior year.
Best Wishes.
I congratulate you on your choice of teaching as a career. You truly
exemplify Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune’s wish for her graduates.
