NASA-Ames Research (1/24/08)
This year, the University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) at NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) will conduct its second annual Small Spacecraft Summer Study Program (S4P). Twelve students will be selected to participate in a 10-week program to develop and test ideas for small spacecraft exploration of Near-Earth Objects (NEO) – ideas that will ultimately lead to a mission proposal. Students will attend lectures, work on team projects, participate in concept design studies, and present their work at a preliminary design review at the end of the summer. Work will be conducted at NASA Ames Research Center under the guidance of scientists and engineers from NASA Ames, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley, and UCB-Space Science Laboratory.
The UARC Systems Teaching Institute is recruiting graduate-level expertise in engineering (electrical, mechanical, aerospace, systems engineering), physics, astronomy, planetary sciences, and business management (emphasis on project management).
Full program details and application instructions can be found at http://uarc.ucsc.edu/sti/s4p_08.shtml.
If you or your students have any questions about the program, please do not hesitate to contact me at (408) 924-5264 or nbatalha@science.sjsu.edu.

NASA-URP (1/17/08)
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is sponsoring the NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program (NASA-USRP) offering undergraduate students across the United States research experiences at NASA Centers. Students may apply for a 10-week summer session or a 15-week spring or fall session. The purpose of the NASA-USRP is three-fold:
- To extend and strengthen NASA’s commitment to educational excellence and university research, highlighting the critical need to increase the Nation’s undergraduate and graduate science, engineering, mathematics, and technology skill base.
- To build a national program bridge — from existing NASA K-12 Education Program activities to NASA Higher Education Program options — that encourages and facilitates student interest in future professional opportunities with NASA and its partner organizations. Such opportunities might include NASA career employment, temporary assignment, undergraduate and graduate co-op appointment, Space Grant scholarships and fellowships, or contractor positions.
- To attract undergraduate students from the widest array of backgrounds, who are fully representative of America’s racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity and to provide them with hands-on, challenging research experiences that stimulate continued student interest in the fields/disciplines aligned with NASA’s research and development mission.
The NASA-USRP seeks applications from undergraduates enrolled full-time in an accredited U.S. college or university. Applicants must be classified as rising sophomores, juniors or seniors at the beginning of the first session for which they are applying. Highly qualified applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate degree that meets NASA's critical competency needs. Eligible fields of study are academic majors or demonstrated coursework concentration in engineering, mathematics, computer science or physical/life sciences.
The NASA-USRP will consist of a 10–15 week research experience at a participating NASA Center under the supervision of a NASA technical mentor. Selected students must be available to work 10 consecutive weeks at 40 hours per week during the Summer 2008 or 15 consecutive weeks at 40 hours per week during spring or fall 2008 (exact dates to be determined by Centers).
Students will receive a $6,000 (10-week summer session) or $9,000 (15-week spring or fall session) stipend for the research experience plus one round-trip airfare or ground transportation allowance to and from the NASA Host Center. A location allowance may be provided for students at specific high cost NASA Centers. At the completion of the research session, students must submit a paper on their NASA-USRP research experience. Students may also be asked to discuss their research in public forums and/or participate in NASA-sponsored colloquia, workshops and technology demonstrations.

DePauw University: Research Experiences for Undergraduates (1/16/07)
The program is designed to provide talented undergraduates who are enrolled at primarily undergraduate institutions (schools that do not have their own graduate programs in computer science) with the opportunity to collaborate on a research project in Computer Science and to experience, first-hand, several of the most rewarding activities that characterize most graduate programs and research careers.
This an NSF sponsored program so the usual restrictions apply: Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions and must plan to be full-time undergraduates at a primarily undergraduate institution (e.g., Bethune-Cookman) in September 2007.
Details are available at www.depauw.edu/univ/reu/
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (3/24/06)
The Research Alliance in Math and Science Program website is now open to accept student applications for the 2006 summer term (May 30 – August 11). See: http://www.csm.ornl.gov/Internships/RAMS.html for program information and link to application form.
Majors: computer science, the computational sciences, mathematics, computational engineering, information technology, visualization from underrepresented populations. Those students whose proposal, experience, and aptitude for research most closely matches on-going projects here at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have a greater probability of being placed.
NOTE: The application form is purposely built such that it cannot be submitted until all fields are completed. Students should have all information available before beginning; the form cannot be saved partially completed and retrieved later. You will have to start over.
In addition to the fact that ORNL is DOE’s largest multi-purpose laboratory, site of the Nation’s Leadership Computing Facility, boasts a completely new and modern east campus with state-of-the-art facilities; students will work with world-class research scientists as their mentors. Summer program stipends are generous and are incremental with academic status and experience; a housing allowance is also included.
