Course Description:

This course is designed to introduce students to general computer concepts with special emphasis on the learning of various application software that is currently used in the computing community. The current suite of applications that will be covered is the Microsoft (MS) Office 2003 suite, in particular, MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. The student will also be made familiar with the Windows XP operating system.

Prerequisite:

The desire to become a hirable user of this software and the conviction and drive to reach your goal.

Course Objectives

The object of this class is to provide students with the modern software tools needed to perform effectively and efficiently in today's workplace. In other words, when you leave this class you should not only be able to claim that you can work with these applications but prove that you can. (It should be noted that many firms who intend to hire people claiming that they know these applications usually test (on the computer) these prospective employees BEFORE HIRING.)

YOU SHOULD STRIVE TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL AND I EXPECT NOTHING LESS FROM YOU AS THE MATERIAL ITSELF IS NOT DIFFICULT AND YOU NEED ONLY PRACTICE AND PRACTICE UNTIL YOU KNOW THINGS BY HEART.

Assessment of Academic Achievement:

Things to note about this class

  • You should try to attend EVERY class. I give tips and extra material that are NOT in the text and I will expect you to know them on exams!  Any student having PERFECT attendance will receive 5 points towards his/her final grade.
  • You will need to spend about an average of 6 hours per week outside of class time practicing the material from class and in the text.
  • You need to know the material by heart as ALL my exams are hands-on and closed-book.
  • You cannot pass this class by attendance only but missing classes usually causes students to do poorly on my exams.
  • If you miss an exam, you will need a documented excuse from a legally valid source (doctor, lawyer, coroner, etc.) for me to consider giving you a makeup.
  • I will not be covering PowerPoint but you will be responsible for the material in that section and your semester project requires a presentation with PowerPoint.
  • You need to get started immediately. You should have already obtained the book. You cannot survive in this class without having the text. (I realize that books are expensive and that you may not have the finances right away but there are other things that can be done to ease the burden. See me for suggestions.)
  • You need to purchase a memory stick (a manufacturer makes one called a JumpDrive but you can buy any type out there) as it can hold much more than a floppy and it will last you throughout your college career.
  • I am here to help and I prefer that you hunt me down for such help. I know how I think better than anyone else.
  • I will send information to you via your Cookman email accounts. Please check all sources daily, especially before class.

Your Semester Project:

  • It is worth 40% of your grade.
  • It must be done by you alone.
  • You must give me a description of what you plan to do for your presentation by the February 27, 2007. (Use PowerPoint to generate and print handouts for me.)
  • The project must involve your gathering data on ANY topic such as teenage pregnancies, Fortune 500 companies, etc. The data must have enough attributes to allow you to do statistical analysis on that data for various categories. For example, the average number of girls getting pregnant between the ages of 13 and 15 by state or the most teenage pregnancies by region, etc. This is not a term paper. You cannot write about how to do something or other.
  • The project MUST use ALL four applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) in an integrated and meaningful fashion for you to obtain credit for the project.
  • You must present the project to the entire class on the day of the final to be able to have the project graded. (This will be one of the days from 4/24 - 4/26.)
