COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course is an investigation of theories concerning the development and functioning of the normal personality, with attention to empirical findings related to individual adjustment or maladjustment. If there are any changes in the information to be covered, an announcement will be made in class.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

      This course will help you to:

 

     1)  understand the core tents underlying each personality theory

 

      2) understand the research methods used in the study of personality

  

     3)  understand how personalities are assessed by each theory 

 

     4)  understand the applicablity of each personality theory  in practice and research

 

     5)  understand how to critique the research on personality theories.

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

 

1)   You will take 3 multiple choice and/or essay exams on the major personality paradigms. Each test is 100 points. No Makeup Exams will be allowed.

 

2)   You will select two research studies on two different personality theories published (1994-present) in a peer reviewed journal and write a summary and critique of the study. The research studies must be about normal personality theory or issues only (no abnormal or psychopathology issue).  The format for writing a journal review will be given to you and posted on  my web page!! The page length for these reviews (summary & critique) is four pages.  All research journal articles must be submitted with your reviews or they will not be accepted. Each review is worth 50 points

Review 1 is due Oct 12, 2005 ; Review 2 is due Nov 23, 2005

3)      You will be required to complete experiential exercises, case studies questions or chapter review questions related to each theory or theory group. These will be assigned by the instructor in class and/or posted on my web site. 10 pts each

 

4)      You will be place in a group or form a group of 3-4 persons to do a 30-45 minute power point presentation on a personality theory that is not or has not been covered in class. Presentations will be scheduled on Fridays. The format  will be given to you in class and/or posted on my web site. A presentation sign up sheet will be circulated in class   100 pts. 

ALL WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE IN APA FORMAT and TYPED!!!

 

Evaluation ‑ 90‑100% of the total points = A, 80‑89% of the total pts = B; 70‑79% of the tot pts = C;

60‑69% of the pts = D. This will be discussed in class.

 

Attendance is required.
