 Learning Communities

On Tuesday, December 4, 2007, Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins facilitated a very successful Learning Communities Planning Workshop for established and forming Learning Community members. Faculty and staff excitedly planned for a creative 2007-2008 school year. Dr. Dawkins is the Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs at Johnson C. Smith University and a national expert on the concept of learning communities.

LC's @ Freshman College

All first semester freshmen are placed into cohorts with block schedules, which facilitate small study groups, team teaching, enrichment activities and an interdisciplinary approach to learning.

Some of these cohorts have been formed into Learning Communities by teams of teachers collaborating and constructing cross-curricular activities with the cohorts. Learning Communities create an environment where students engage in relevant, in-depth, real-world experiences.
